Oxymetholone side effects can be really bad as long as you don’t use this anabolic steroid correctly. This is an extremely powerful anabolic steroid with the brand name Anadrol. People often call Anadrol tablets A-bombs and that’s because of how immensely powerful is. In fact, Anadrol (Oxymetholone) is considered the most powerful oral steroid on the market.
Bodybuilders use it in off seasons (when bulking) as it significantly increases muscle size and strength. It has very powerful effects allowing you to bulk extremely fast and efficiently. Nonetheless, due to its immense power, side effects can be really harsh too. Therefore, when talking about Anadrol, you should be aware of Oxymetholone side effects too!
Explaining Oxymetholone Side Effects
Considering that Anadrol (Oxymetholone) is very powerful, it can have intense effects on the body and that’s including both the benefits and the side effects. As with any other drug, it can affect people differently, that’s why it’s important to take it slowly and never follow anyone else’s plan. Find your own best cycle with Anadrol.
- PS: Regardless of whether it’s Anadrol or other brand names, what really matters is Oxymetholone (chemical name).
Also, it’s pretty obvious that the dosage is going to play a huge role in the intensity and frequency of Oxymetholone side effects.

Moreover, although side effects can be pretty harsh, it’s important to mention that Anadrol is one of the few steroids that are still approved by the FDA, alongside others such as Testosterone, Anavar, and Deca Durabolin. While this doesn’t make Anadrol (Oxymetholone) all safe, it does prove that it can be highly effective and relatively safe with mild side effects as long as you use it correctly.
In the end, it’s important to remember that the better results you experience from an anabolic steroid, usually, the worse the side effects are. So, considering that Anadrol is producing some of the best strength and mass gains, it’s also a harsh steroid. That’s why I generally do not recommend it for beginners. Anadrol (Oxymetholone) is more suitable for people who already have experience with steroids.
Oxymetholone Side Effects Include:
- Liver Toxicity
- Testosterone Suppression
- High Blood Pressure
- Androgenic Issues
- Risk of Injury
- Estrogenic Issues
Liver Toxicity
One of the biggest problems with Anadrol is the fact that it is a hepatotoxic compound. Oxymetholone is a C17-AA anabolic and androgenic steroid. This is the alkylation that makes Oxymetholone highly bioactive when you use it as an oral compound (tablets). So, you could easily use it as a tablet and it is going to remain active in the bloodstream.
- However, exactly like any other C17AA steroid, it is going to stress your liver. Some liver strain is inevitable and if you use Anadrol in high dosage and/or for excessive periods of time, it is going to be particularly damaging to the liver.
However, by using Anadrol (Oxymetholone) properly and taking precautions, liver stress might not be an issue. You need to use it in low to moderate doses in relatively short cycles of 4-6 weeks. 8 weeks cycle is the maximum but even this could be too stressful for your liver.
Except for that, you could reduce hepatic toxicity by avoiding anything else that is liver toxic such as alcohol, other C17AA steroids, and medications that are stressing your liver. Moreover, by adding liver-supporting supplements, you could reduce the strain Oxymetholone has on your organ. Some examples are TUDCA, NAC, Milk Thistle, LIV-52, and N2Guard among others. These can help keep the liver enzymes in the normal range.
I recommend checking your liver enzymes (AST and ALT enzymes) before and after the cycle (maybe even during the cycle) to check how your liver is doing. Do not use liver toxic compounds like Anadrol if you already have liver issues.
Testosterone Suppression
- It’s important to understand that Oxymetholone is not unique in terms of suppressing endogenous testosterone production. All anabolic steroids will have this effect.
That’s why I recommend stacking Oxymetholone with testosterone during the cycle and that’s why a Post Cycle Therapy (PCT) plan is so important after finishing the cycle of whatever anabolic steroid.
You do not need a PCT plan if you’re in Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) or cruising which means that your body relies on exogenous testosterone. But if you don’t plan to inject testosterone for the rest of your life, you do need a PCT plan. Otherwise, you will end up with low testosterone levels. Therefore, a PCT is vital to accelerate the restoration of natural testosterone production which will not only keep your gains but will keep your mental well-being.
Low testosterone levels can lead to (among many other negative symptoms):
- Low energy
- Lack of motivation
- Decrease in muscle mass and strength
- Decrease in libido and impotence
- Increase in fat and tiredness
- An overall decrease in well-being
Natural testosterone levels start recovering as soon as all steroids are out of your body. But it can leave you with many months of suffering from low T until the body regains its full ability to produce normal testosterone levels.
Some people also implement HCG (usually at the end of the cycle) to make their testicle work again before getting into the PCT program. Usually, it goes with Nolvadex and/or Clomid.
High Blood Pressure
Absolutely all anabolic and androgenic steroids are going to increase the person’s blood pressure because of the increase in testosterone-like hormones. This leads to a negative effect on cholesterol levels, therefore – higher blood pressure. So, all steroids can negatively affect your cholesterol, and all steroids can increase blood pressure. They increase LDL (bad) cholesterol levels and decrease HDL (good) cholesterol levels.
- The problem with Anadrol is that it is possibly among the worst steroids in regards to blood pressure and that’s because of combined factors. If you’re already suffering from hypertension, it may be a wise choice to stay away from it.
Studies indicate that Anadrol is having a pretty big impact on LDL levels and especially when it comes to decreasing HDL levels. This is because of the fact that Anadrol affects your liver. Negative impact on the liver results in negative cholesterol effects.
Except for that, Anadrol will spike red blood cell count. This is effective for bulking up and growing muscle, but this can also lead to an increase in blood pressure. Studies indicate that Oxymetholone could increase the number of red blood cells by 5x.
This makes the blood more viscous leading to higher blood pressure. Additionally, the same blood thickening effect has when you retain water. And Anadrol is one of the worst steroids when it comes to water retention too (will explain below).
So…
A steroid like Anadrol (Oxymetholone) with a dramatic effect on cholesterol (mainly due to liver toxicity as well as other factors), water retention, and red blood cell count increase – it can definitely increase blood pressure. This could have a negative effect on your heart.
Signs of hypertension are nosebleeds and headaches among others. I strongly recommend keeping an eye on your blood pressure and making sure you deal with it. Some need blood pressure medications to lower it. But you can also keep blood pressure in the normal range with a proper diet, performing regular cardio exercises, and other factors.
Androgenic Issues
- Oxymetholone side effects include androgenic issues, again, as with any other anabolic steroids. They are all capable of causing such issues considering that all steroids have at least some androgenic activity. Some have more than others, however, this means that some are worse than others in terms of androgenicity.
Additionally, androgenic issues are very closely related to a person’s genetics (cycle length and dosage, of course, play a huge role too, as in any other effects).
However, Anadrol has a moderate androgenic rating of 45. This means that it is less than half the rating of testosterone. However, this doesn’t mean that it is safe. Real-life settings and experiences suggest that Anadrol (Oxymetholone) is actually pretty capable of causing hair loss, oily skin, and acne (common androgenic issues). Others include aggression and excessive hair growth on the face and/or body. Androgens are important to gain muscle and strength, but they can lead to these side effects, especially if the person is naturally prone to them.
The reason Oxymetholone side effects in regards to androgenic activity aren’t milder despite lower androgenic activity is that this is a DHT (dihydrotestosterone) derivative. This is a hormone that is responsible for hair loss on the scalp.
Generally, the higher DHT levels a person has, the fewer hair follicles leading to hair thinning and hair loss. It also leads to acne breakouts after suffering from oily skin. That’s because of the sebaceous glands that secrete too much oil (meant to moisturize the skin), blocking the pores, and leading to acne.
But then again…
Please remember these issues are strongly related to a person’s genetics. For example, it will not make you suddenly aggressive when you’re a calm person. But it could make you more impulsive if you’re short-tempered by nature. Moreover, there are people who use Trenbolone for months and keep thick hair (Trenbolone is among the worst for hair), while others can use a mild steroid like Deca (Deca is among the safest for hair) and still suffer significant baldness.
Risk Of Injury
The risk of injury is not actually an Oxymetholone side effect. In fact, we can consider that it is a steroid that actually decreases injury risk. But the reason why I mention it is the fact that Anadrol is increasing muscle and strength levels extremely fast. In a couple of weeks, a person is capable of lifting 60 lbs more on the main exercises.
- This is putting a lot of stress on your wrists and ligaments, sometimes, so big risks that it leads to injuries when you attempt to break another personal record (that is usually too big from the previous personal record).
This is when your muscles might be ready for the extra strength, but your ligaments and pectorals might not yet be ready. To avoid these issues, I strongly recommend a good warm up of the muscles and ligaments before attempting to lift heavy and do not try to break personal records too often. Moreover, you could lift lighter weights with more reps to reduce the risk of injury.
Estrogenic Issues
I earlier mentioned that Anadrol (Oxymetholone) is a DHT derivative and now you see that it causes estrogenic side effects. The two most notable estrogenic issues are water retention and gynecomastia. If you’re in the steroids game for a while, you know that this is strange because DHT derivatives do not aromatize. So, nor does Oxymetholone will aromatize into estrogen. How are estrogenic side effects like water retention, bloating, and gynecomastia then possible?
- Well, Oxymetholone will not increase estrogen levels, but it is going to stimulate estrogen receptors directly. This is the reason why using Aromatase Inhibitors (AIs) during the cycle to avoid and/or control estrogenic issues will be ineffective. That’s because AIs will lower estrogen, but Anadrol will not increase this hormone’s level.
All you can do is use Nolvadex – Tamoxifen Citrate (which is a Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulator – SERM) that will bind to estrogen receptors, even more stronger than Oxymetholone. The problem is that Nolvadex will only help with gynecomastia, yet it will not help with bloating or water retention.
That’s why I earlier said that Oxymetholone is one of the worst in terms of water retention and high blood pressure. It can cause significant amounts of extracellular fluid retention and there’s no way for you to control it.
Keep in mind that water retention is actually beneficial during a steroid cycle. It’s because intracellular fluid aids ATP production increasing muscular size and strength. The negative part is that the muscles look smooth and your muscles are less defined. It also could lead to bloating. Water retention is not a good idea during the cutting cycles, for vascularity, getting ripped, leaner, and shredded.
Water Retention
When talking particularly about water retention, there are some users who do not experience too much bloating or fluid retention on Anadrol (Oxymetholone). That usually occurs only in those who are already very lean and who are having an extremely clean diet. That’s why there are still some people who use Anadrol before the competition to look extra full without water retention.
It happens because, with the help of a great diet, they are capable of maintaining sodium at bay. Sodium is causing you to retain more water. When you combine it with Oxymetholone – it leads to water retention. Considering that a lot of bulking cycles (diets) contain sodium – it leads to water retention.
Yet, people who are already lean have a lower presence of estrogen and their sodium intake remains low. This can make Anadrol help you full, yet dry. Yet, you will need to avoid any other compounds that aromatize into estrogen.
Gynecomastia
As you can guess, gynecomastia can appear because Oxymetholone binds to estrogen receptors in the breast tissues. Mild gyno is resembling swollen nipples, while severe gyno may cause a man to develop breasts that look similar to those of a woman.
Again, Aromatase Inhibitors (AIs) like Arimidex, Aromasin, or Femara will not be effective in reducing estrogenic side effects because Anadrol doesn’t increase estrogen levels (it doesn’t aromatize).
Nolvadex is what can help you prevent gyno because it directly binds to estrogen receptors in the breast tissues.
Conclusion Oxymetholone Side Effects – Is Anadrol Safe?
In the end, Anadrol is an FDA-approved medication in the United States for the treatment of anemia and is prescribed to HIV and AIDS patients too. This medication is considered safe.
Nonetheless, it’s important to understand that bodybuilders use Anadrol in higher doses than individuals who use them in medical settings for treating some health conditions. That’s why the side effects risks of Oxymetholone are higher.
It’s very important to remember that you should use it in the proper dosage and proper cycle length in order to avoid its side effects.
In addition to that, it’s very important to understand that when you buy Anadrol from untrustworthy sources, there’s no guarantee that you will get real Oxymetholone. For this reason, I strongly recommend paying attention to where exactly you’re buying Oxymetholone from.
