If you think you’re ready for your first anabolic steroid cycle, you need to learn how to inject testosterone intramuscularly. Testosterone is the best steroid as the first steroid for a beginner. Additionally, you’re going to need testosterone as a base compound in all other anabolic steroid cycles. Plus to that, there are a lot of anabolic steroids that come only as injections. You need to use them by injection intramuscularly – same as testosterone.
With all of that being said, if you want to use anabolic steroids you need to learn how to perform a self injection. Unless you have someone near you, ready to help whenever you need an intramuscular shot. Intramuscular shots mean that the drug (testosterone, other anabolic steroids, or whatever other injectable medication) should go directly into the muscle.
Since testosterone is by far the most widely used – we’re going to talk about self-injecting testosterone. But the method of performing intramuscular injections is the same for all other drugs.
So, there’s no good way to use anabolic steroids without injecting intramuscularly. There are oral steroids, but you’ll still need testosterone. That’s why I recommend carefully reading this post. Here you’re going to find everything you need to know for safely performing an intramuscular shot all by yourself.
Initially, you may be nervous about it, I know as most of us did. But for those who use steroids for months or even years, that’s nothing more than routine. Performing a shot is extremely fast and easy.
Before We Continue…
You need to know a couple of things. For example – why do you need testosterone (or other steroids)? You need to answer this question so you can determine the dosage that you need to administer. If you’re having questions about dosage specifically for you and your needs – fill out the free cycle advice form on our website. Our professional bodybuilders and athletes would gladly help you, and offer individualized advice based on your stats and goals.
- Firstly – determine the dosage that you need per shot.
Some people inject as much as 500 mg per single shot. Others use as little as 50 mg per shot or even less. Dosages vary a lot. For example, people using Testosterone for their Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) commonly use around 100 mg per week. But big bodybuilders looking to bulk up can use doses of 1,000 mg per week or even higher.
- Secondly – determine the frequency of shots.
There are different testosterone esters. The ester delays the release after administration. Each ester has a different release time. While you need to use Testosterone Propionate on a daily basis (or at least every other day), you can use Testosterone Cypionate only twice a week (or at least once weekly). So, consider the type of testosterone you’re planning to use to maintain stable blood levels of testosterone.
- Lastly – determine the concentration of testosterone.
Common concentrations range between 200 mg and 300 mg per mL you inject. However, there are those with 100 mg/mL up to about 500 mg/mL. So, each liquid has different concentrations. You need to take the concentration of testosterone solution into account before injecting.
Again, if you have some questions regarding this – fill up the free cycle advice form.
Precautions
You also need to know a couple of more things before actually starting to inject. For example, you always need to use only sterile and never-before-used accessories. That’s obvious, but I still need to highlight the importance of keeping everything sterile and as clean as possible.
As soon as you use a needle, a syringe, or whatever other accessories – throw it away.
Moreover, try to keep everything clean. Wash your hands to reduce the risks of infection. You’ve got to wash your hands thoroughly with enough antibacterial soap and water for at least 20-30 seconds before performing an injection. Disinfect all the surfaces around too. If you touch a dirty object or surface after washing your hands, wash them again. Reduce the risks of contamination and infections as much as possible. Disinfect everything and let it dry. Infections, contaminations, or alcohol residue is likely to make everything more painful.
In addition– never use expired testosterone or other medications. Never share them with other people. Keep them out of reach of children or animals. Always keep the medication at the recommended temperature and in proper storage conditions. Don’t change the recommended dosage unless you’re absolutely sure you know what you’re doing.
List of Items You Need to Perform Injection:
Make sure you have everything ready before starting to inject testosterone or whatever injectable anabolic steroid.

- Testosterone bottle
- A syringe (1-3 mL). Doesn’t really matter the size. Obviously, unless the syringe is smaller than the amount you want to use.
- One needle for drawing the medication. That’s a thicker needle being anywhere between 18-21 gauge needle. Doesn’t really matter as long as it is within range. A thicker needle is important to draw testosterone. This is a thick oily solution that is hard to draw through a thinner needle.
- One needle for injecting the medication. It should be at least 1 inch long unless you’re less than 130 lbs (60 kg). If you’re over 180 lbs (80 kg) then use a 1.5 inch long needle up to about 260 lbs (120 kg). Anywhere between 150 lbs (70 kg) and 200 lbs (90 kg) – both 1” and 1.5” work fine. You’ll need a thinner needle of 22 gauge or most commonly 23 gauge. Thinner needles are less likely to cause pain.
- A few alcohol pads/ swabs
- A few cotton balls
Tips to Reduce Pain – PIPs (Post Injection Pains)
There are various things you can do to avoid/reduce pains. Before I share them, I need to let you know that some level of discomfort and pain is normal during/after injection. Especially for beginners. The “virgin” muscles should get used and the pains are likely to disappear with time.
If the pain doesn’t disappear with time or/and it’s unbearable, you’re either likely to do something incorrectly or you’re having allergies.
Try the following methods for reducing pains during/after injections:
- Heat up the solution. Make sure it’s at least at room temperature. Keep it under your armpit or under hot water for a few minutes before injecting. Warming the solution might greatly help!
- Relax the muscles. I don’t recommend injecting into muscles that are sore. Doesn’t matter if they are sore from activity or from previous injections. Relax muscles as much as possible. That’s why I would recommend injecting immediately after a hot shower when muscles are relaxed.
- Rotate injection sites. Don’t use the same spot continuously. Switch up as often as possible. There are at least six spots you can rotate around.
- Massage the injection spot before and after the shot.
- Apply ice or special creams to numb the area after the shot.
- Use less dosage. The higher the amount, the more likely it is to cause pain. Never go over 2 mL per shot.
- Less testosterone concentration is better. The higher the concentration, the higher the pain. 200 mg/ml is less likely to be painful compared to 400 mg/ml, for example.
- Switch esters. Many people report that Testosterone Propionate is more painful than Testosterone Cypionate, for example. The shorter the ester – the more likely it to be painful.
- When injecting – do it slowly. Push one mL of solution in about 30 seconds. Don’t do it too fast.
Where to Inject Testosterone? | Best Testosterone Injection Sites
You need to administer Testosterone (as with all other injectable anabolic steroids) intramuscularly directly into the muscle. You need to go for spots that have large muscles and fewer blood vessels and nerves. There are 3 different spots that are best for such needs:
- Thighs
- Glutes
- Deltoids
There are other spots where you can perform intramuscular injections, however, I wouldn’t recommend them. Especially for beginners. These six spots (each one has 2 sides) are enough for beginners.
- If you inject into thigh muscles – go for the outer part somewhere in the top-middle part. Outer left on the left leg, outer right on the right leg.
- By injecting into your glutes muscles (butt cheeks) – imagine your butt cheek into 4 equal sections. You need to inject in the top outer section. Same here – top right on right glute, top left on left glute.
- With deltoids muscles – you need to find the center of muscles. Usually, around 2 inches above the armpit. Which spot you choose – doesn’t really matter. Testosterone (and other anabolic steroids) won’t affect only the muscles you inject but the entire body.
You’re still going to need to rotate the injection sites to allow muscles to recover from the injection.
Prepare the Syringe
If you’re ready for injection – you first need to have the syringe ready. Start with disinfection. Wash your hands and clean the surfaces you’re going to use. Take the syringe and attach the drawing needle in case it comes without a pre-attached needle. Pull back the plunger to take air inside the syringe barrel. You’ll need the exact same amount of air as you plan to draw testosterone.
For example, if you plan 1 mL, then draw air to the 1 mL mark. Wipe the lid of the medication bottle with the alcohol pad and let it dry. Insert the needle through that lid. Push down the air from the syringe into the bottle. This raises the air pressure inside. It’s important to increase air pressure to make it easier to draw testosterone. Especially because testosterone is a thick oil. Then turn the bottle upside down. With the syringe pointing up, draw the dosage of testosterone at the exact mark you need. Remove the needle from the bottle.
Next, you need to aspirate the syringe.

Do it by changing the needles first from the thicker (drawing) needle to the thinner (injecting) needle. Then tap the barrel of the syringe with your finger until you make sure that all air bubbles from the solution are on the top.
When there are no more air bubbles – depress the plunger and stop when a tiny bit of solution comes out of the needle. Be sure there’s no more air left inside because injecting air bubbles into the body can block an artery (embolism).
Injection Sites
Wipe the area where you plan to inject with the alcohol pad. It’s important to do so to kill the bacteria and not let it inside causing infections and contaminations. Let the area dry. As said, prior to this you could massage the area to try to reduce pain. Again, it doesn’t really matter the injection spot you choose. It could be one of the following: thighs, glutes, or deltoids.
Injecting
Hold the syringe with your hand like a dart. Keep the fingers off the plunger. You should hold it above the pre-wiped and dried injection site at 90 degree angle. With the other hand spread the skin around (using your finger and thumb).
Now, with a single and quick move, jab the needle into the flesh. Do it fast but not too aggressively. Make sure the needle enters at 90 degree angle and it’s fully inside, reaching the muscle.
Draw the plunger first. You’ve got to make sure you don’t draw blood into the syringe. If you do, remove the needle and go for a different spot. Drawing blood means you’ve hit a vein and you shouldn’t try injecting the medication.
Change the injection spot and draw again. If no blood comes out – you’re ready to inject. Push the plunger slowly and steadily. At a controlled pace. You need to inject it at about 30 seconds per mL rate. As soon as you fully injected the medication – that’s it.
Post Injection Care Of Injection Site
Before you actually pull the needle out, I would recommend using an alcohol pad or cotton ball to apply some pressure around the injection site. Doing so is going to help you reduce extra pains caused by needle emerging and pulling the skin.
In case you’re bleeding, apply the cotton ball and/or the band-aid. Apply ice or numbing creams if you wish. A normal level of redness, swelling, or discomfort, especially for beginners, is normal. If you experience discomfort beyond the level of normal (soreness, pain, rash, etc.) you’re doing something wrong or you’re allergic to components. Check above the “how to reduce pains tips”.
